Epicitehydro – hydroactive dressing for advanced burn wound treatment

A biotechnologically produced cellulose epicitehydro wound dressing provides unique properties. Due to its very dense and homogeneous structure, it contains at least 95% isotonic saline solution.

It creates a supportive moist environment for the wound with appropriate hydro-balance and water vapor permeability.
It absorbs excess wound exudate.
It provides an immediate cooling effect after application.
It easily adapts to wounds of all types and shapes and can be cut to the required size.
It dries during the healing process and after successful epithelialization, and can be removed easily and almost painlessly.

Indications

Epicitehydro has been developed to support the healing of acute dermal wounds.
It is indicated for superficial and deep partial-thickness wounds with mild to moderate exudate.

-Superficial and deep partial-thickness thermal or chemical burn wounds (1st and 2nd degree)
-Scalds
-Skin graft donor sites
-Abrasions
-Lacerations

epicitehydro – Application

For superficial burn wounds (degree 2a): no dressing change is required.
For mixed superficial and deep partial-thickness burn wounds (degrees 2a and 2b), a dressing change may be required:

-Rehydrate epicitehydro for easy and nearly painless removal.
-After wound assessment, apply a new epicitehydro dressing.

epicitehydro – combined use with common antiseptics

An in vitro study analyzed the use of epicitehydro with common antiseptics. The uptake and release of antiseptics by the wound dressing, as well as the inhibition profile against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), were determined.

Epicitehydro demonstrates rapid and efficient uptake of antiseptic solutions

Among the six antiseptic solutions tested, five wound dressings absorbed more than 40% of the active compound after soaking for only 30 minutes (Figure 1B).

Epicitehydro enables controlled release of antiseptic solutions
While Prontosan and Mafenide provide faster release kinetics (Figure 2A), octenidine and Lavanid 2 provide continuous and prolonged release from epicitehydro.
The epicitehydro dressing loaded with Betaisodona® showed effective release over a 24-hour period, whereas the release from commercially available Betaisodona® Wundgaze was no longer visually detectable after 6 hours (Figure 2B).

is effective against Staphylococcus aureus

Compared with commercially available products, all six antiseptics in the study showed good or even better inhibition of S. aureus growth.
With Octenisept®, epicitehydro required only a 10-minute loading time to produce results similar to commercially available Octenisept® gel. The inhibition capacity of Betaisodona® was consistently higher than that of commercially available Betaisodona® Wundgaze.

Epicitehydro provides an efficient cooling effect and reduces intradermal damage

Burn wound progression is a major concern, as burns initially considered superficial may become full-thickness over time. Cooling is an effective method for reducing burn wound conversion.
However, if the cooling agent is below room temperature, the patient may be at risk of hypothermia depending on the size of the wound.
In a human ex-vivo study, the effect of cooling on intradermal damage caused by contact burns at 100°C was investigated.
For cooling through evaporation, non-precooled epicitehydro, consisting of more than 95% water, was used.

epicitehydro reduces intradermal temperature

When burned skin is covered with epicitehydro, the intradermal temperature decreases significantly compared with non-cooled skin samples.

A short-term cooling effect of up to 6.4°C after 2 minutes reduces burn wound conversion.
An average temperature difference of 2°C after 30 minutes.
A cooling effect of 1–2°C remains stable for 24 hours.

Histological results comparing cooled and non-cooled burn samples showed major differences, especially during the first hour after the burn. Burn wounds cooled with Epicitehydro showed:

-Significantly less cellular degeneration and necrosis
-Less dermal-epidermal separation
-More viable cells.
